COLOMA, Mich.-- Going solo for confidence.

Coloma students in the fifth and sixth grade performed entirely on their own in front of judges for feedback, similar to what you'd see at a solo or ensemble competition.

The whole purpose of this, to help students gain both experience and confidence in playing alone.

The band director telling ABC57, the students were pretty enthusiastic about the chance to showcase their progress.

"I think a lot of the kids are really, really loving playing and getting the opportunity to play by themselves. It's one of the top things that, especially my fifth graders, we want to do every Friday. We have full band on Friday, and they want to play by themselves in front of the full class and show us what they've learned this week and stuff," stated Band Director for Coloma Community Schools Marc Hartman.

The 'Go Solo Festival' initiative is supported by and made possible by the community, the school board, and a bunch of helpful high school student volunteers.
