Family safe after South Bend home goes up in flames

SOUTH BEND, Ind - A family of four thought to be inside their South Bend home after it went up in flames is safe, but their house is destroyed.

The Battalion Chief, Mark Catanzarite, said initially, crews got reports people were trapped in the home on the 2800 block of Arrowhead Drive.

“There has been nobody found inside the structure. Neighbors were concerned because it’s normally an occupied residence,” said Catanzarite.

The Chief said  strong winds made the fire difficult to put out and prompted crews to evacuate the family living next door.

“Given the direction of the wind and the way the flames were coming, we were concerned about extension to their residence so we asked them to exit their home temporarily. They have since been relocated into their house.”

Since there was a lot of damage to the first and second floors of the tri-level home, the Chief said crews pulled out after searching for people over worries of the walls collapsing.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation Tuesday morning.
