Elkhart making changes to a troubled intersection
ELKHART, Ind. -- Some drivers in Elkhart are getting fed up with a busy intersection.
On Thursday, a semi crashed into the signal box at Cassopolis and Bristol Streets, knocking out power for several hours.
This is the third accident at that intersection in six weeks.
Adding to the difficult turn is a center island, forcing semi drivers to take a wide turn to avoid hitting the curb and the signal box.
Fixing the problem isn't as simple as moving the curb.
"Without that curb, people would attempt to turn left too close to the intersection, blocking up traffic," Mike Machlan, Elkhart city engineer, said.
Crews will install a "no right turn for trucks" on State Road 19 and crews will move the box to a less hazardous location where it won't get hit again.
