ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. - The Elkhart County NAACP hosted an event Saturday, recognizing and honoring the top black history essays written by students throughout the county.
Membership Chair for the NAACP, Sonia Hadley-Davis, says the turnout was great and an essential part of telling their story.
Hadley-Davis added, "So many people just don't know. And we need to let people know who we are. So, I think it's imperative that we get our stories out there."
Part of the process of sharing black stories with the community also included celebrating local black writers and authors, both published and unpublished.
These storytellers were given the chance to speak about their experiences, their writings, and what they hope to achieve with their work.
