Elkhart Clinic main campus set to reopen after gasoline vapor forced closure

NOW: Elkhart Clinic main campus set to reopen after gasoline vapor forced closure

UPDATE: On Friday, March 14, The Elkhart Clinic sent out a message regarding a timeline for reopening.

From the Elkhart Clinic:

The Elkhart Clinic is pleased to announce the re-opening of its main building for all services beginning Monday, March 17, 2025. Following an extensive evaluation and environmental mitigation process, we have received official clearance confirming that the air inside the facility is safe, allowing us to welcome patients and staff back with confidence.

Over the past few weeks, we have worked diligently alongside environmental consultants to install a comprehensive mitigation system designed to prevent any future vapor intrusion. This state-of-the-art system effectively captures vapors before they can enter the building, ensuring the ongoing safety of our environment. Additionally, we have seal-coated the basement walls and floors to provide an extra layer of protection.

While we have taken significant steps to safeguard the building, our team remains committed to identifying the source of the vapor and continuing our investigation to prevent any future concerns.

As part of our reopening, some providers have been relocated to different areas within the main building to improve accessibility for our patients. We encourage patients to visit our website at www.elkhartclinic.com to view the revised list of provider office locations. For those who need assistance locating their provider in their new location, staff will be available at the main entrance to provide guidance.

“We are excited to fully reopen our main building and continue providing the high-quality healthcare services our patients rely on,” said Sara Koziel, Chief Operating Officer of the Elkhart Clinic. “The safety of our patients, staff, and community remains our top priority, and we appreciate everyone’s patience and support during this time.”

ORIGINAL: ELKHART, Ind. -- Elkhart Clinic's main campus is set to reopen to patients next week, but it is still unknown where the source of the gasoline vapor that was seeping in through the basement was coming from.

The clinic shut their doors in late Jan. to deal with this issue.

Today, Chief Operating Officer Sara Koziel posted a video to Facebook, making note of the goof air quality they have had the past few weeks after installing a vapor intrusion mitigation system.

Koziel stated soil and ground water samples showed most of the vapor was coming from a "source to the north", running down through the groundwater under the clinic's main building.

Koziel did note that this did not impact the building water supply.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is working to track down the source of the vapor.

Elkhart Clinic's main campus is set to officially reopen at 7 a.m. on March 17.
