Elkhart Chapter of Black Expo will host a free Fire Safety Workshop & Information Session
In light of recent house fires that have happened in the Michiana area, an Elkhart organization is coming together to create awareness.
The Elkhart Chapter of Black Expo, the Elkhart Public Library and the Elkhart Fire Department have teamed up to host a fire safety awareness workshop.
Tonight's workshop will teach how to operate a fire extinguisher, how to phone 911 correctly and how to put an escape plan together.
Those who attend the information session tonight will receive free carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms.
“We just want to take an hour to train the community on some of these things that are important that we just don’t get on a daily basis. Hopefully we never have to use them, but just in case, maybe we can save some lives,” President of the Elkhart Chapter of Black Expo Robert Taylor said.
Taylor expressed his hope that more of these sessions can be held in nearby areas such as south bend, Goshen and Mishawaka.
“I think it’s important because especially in the world we live in, people don’t think it’s important until it hits our doorstep. We just want to make awareness that it may hit your doorstep, so let’s get prepared just in case. Let’s make it so that we don’t have to see this again or try so we don’t see this again. Let's come together as a community in a positive matter versus a negative matter,” Taylor said.
Tonight’s session will take place at the Elkhart Public Library starting at 6 p.m. EST.
