Elkhart celebrating Earth Day with free, family-friendly tree giveaway event

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Environmental Center (EEC) will be celebrating Earth Day this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. by giving away free trees, along with other family-friendly activities.

"Starting at 10 a.m., you can grab one of 11 tree species to take home," organizers said. "This year’s trees are larger than those given away in the past; trees range from two-five feet tall."

Starting at 11 a.m., there will be a presentation on a new local group working to tackle invasive species in Elkhart County with attendees helping to remove invasive honeysuckle from around the center—and replant the area with native trees.

At noon there will be a "Spring Seeds & Starters Exchange."

"Bring your seeds, bulbs, and spring plant starts to exchange with other gardeners (plants must be healthy, potted in soil and properly watered; plants and seeds must be non-invasive species), organizers said. "All event-long you can enjoy booths, kids activities (including a scavenger hunt, making recycled bubbles, and more!), and food from Tako Party Food Truck."

Those in attendance can learn about the environment and the services it provides by visiting one of the city department booths. Also, Elkhart's aquatic biologist will be by the river to talk about the health of the Elkhart river—with live fish from the river.

"You can also stop by and chat with other city departments and community organizations, such as the Elkhart County Soil & Water Conservation District, Elkhart Public Library (they’re bringing their book bus!), Michiana Master Gardeners’ Association and more," organizers said. "Don’t forget to drop by the EEC’s booth and learn about upcoming programs and events. There are plenty of activities for you and your family to enjoy. Don’t miss this fun and educational event!"

Admission to Elkhart’s Earth Day is free, thanks to support by Lisa Yoder State Farm, the Elkhart County Soil & Water Conservation District, and Freshieez.
