NOW: Michiana Lawmakers react to economic uncertainty with Trump tariffs

WASHINGTON -- Indiana Congressman Rudy Yakym responded to economic uncertainty Friday, emphasizing his commitment to Hoosier manufacturers, farmers, and the administration’s tariff policies.

“I am in close contact with Hoosier manufacturers, farmers, and the administration on tariffs,” Yakym said in a statement. “Indiana’s Second District is the type of production economy President Trump wants to see across the country, and I look forward to passing pro-growth policies that increase manufacturing and jobs to ensure our shared goal of a level playing field.”

Michigan Rep. Tim Walberg also weighed in, saying economic policies under the Trump administration have spurred growth.

“We’re already seeing the reinvigoration of the American economy due to the policies of the Trump administration, as evidenced by the latest job report, which showed 228,000 jobs being added in March,” Walberg said.

He added that Trump’s tariffs will “level the playing field” and encourage new investment across the U.S.

Lawmakers from both sides of the political aisle are also discussing the potential risks and benefits of the tariffs. Indiana Sen. Todd Young told ABC57 News that while tariffs can be a strategic tool, they must be applied carefully.

“The Trump administration rightly takes the view that the U.S. has been on the receiving end of a lot of provocative trade activity over the years, and it’s time for America to push back,” Young said.

However, he cautioned against implementing tariffs without a clear strategy.

“While tariffs can be a useful tool, they also carry downside risk if applied without a clear strategy—especially for Hoosier farmers and manufacturers who need certainty,” he said.
