Driver dead after striking roadside assistance vehicle on I-80 Friday morning

GARY, Ind. -- The Indiana State Police reports deputies responded to a crash around mile-marker 7.7 on I-80/94 Friday morning.
The report states around 7 a.m. Friday, an Indiana Department of Transportation Hoosier Helper vehicle was parked on the eastbound shoulder at the 7.7 mile-marker on I-80/94 to assist a stranded motorist with changing a flat tire.
Police say the Hoosier Helper vehicle had all its rear-facing emergency lighted activated while the tire was being changed.
The report states at the same time a red 2008 Ford pickup truck was traveling east on I-80/94 when it left the eastbound lanes at a high rate of speed, rear-ending the Hoosier Helper vehicle, which resulted in what troopers described as "catastrophic damage" to the Ford.
The Ford's driver was pinned in the vehicle and responding troopers attempted to render first aid but found no pulse.
The Lake County Coroner was called to the scene at which point they declared the driver dead at the scene.
The occupants of the stranded vehicle and the Hoosier Helper driver were not seriously injured according to the report.
The Ford driver's identity will be released pending positive identification and notification of family.
Toxicology results will also be pending the results of the autopsy.
Police believe driver impairment to be a factor in the crash due to evidence at the scene.
