Driver cited for using cell phone after crashing into utility pole Wednesday

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office cited 38-year-old Keeley Mackowicz, of Elkhart, for using her cell phone while driving after she went off the road and crashed into a utility pole on Wednesday.

Authorities say the call came in around 8:01 p.m. of a single-vehicle crash on S.R. 120, when they arrived, they found the 2008 Jeep Patriot Mackowicz was driving with heavy front-end damage. 

Mackowicz was reportedly driving southwest on S.R. 120, west of C.R. 17 when the incident happened.

"[Mackowicz] was unsafely moving in and out the lane while being distracted and went off on the northwest side of S.R. 120, impacted two chevron signs with posts and then impacted an AEP pole with [the Jeep's] front end," the ECSO said.

"[The Jeep] sustained heavy front-end damage and damage on the rear driver side wheel. [Mickowicz] was transported to the Elkhart General Hospital for complaints of pain in her legs."

She was cited for Use of Telecommunication Device While Operating a Moving Motor Vehicle.
