ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. – Outgoing Elkhart County Health Officer, Dr. Lydia Mertz, joins ABC57 to reflect on her career and the incredibly difficult fight against COVID-19.
ABC57’s Brian Conybeare discusses with Dr. Mertz what is next for her; if there have been any challenges bigger than the coronavirus; and how difficult it was to try to protect people with the county and nation being so polarized.
“It really interfered with the job. That was most unfortunate. It made it harder to convince everyone to come together to work together to help control the spread of the virus,” said Dr. Mertz. “That’s been a really unfortunate thing and I think that still continues with some people, although most people are now seeing how much better things are when everybody’s wearing a mask: How we control the spread and how many more things we can do.”
