Inmate death investigation underway at Miami Correctional Facility

BUNKER HILL, Ind. -- An investigation is underway at Miami Correctional Facility following the death of an inmate, according to a press release from Indiana State Police.

On Monday, detectives with ISP began an investigation at the request of the Miami Correctional Facility following the death of an inmate, 70-year-old Lannie Morgan of South Bend.

According to a press release, around 9:40 a.m., Morgan was discovered unresponsive by staff members in his I Unit cell.

An ambulance was called for Morgan but authorities say he was pronounced deceased before reaching the hospital.

A preliminary investigation suggests foul play and his death is being treated as a homicide, according to the press release.

An autopsy was conducted and results are pending.

Morgan had been incarcerated since December of 2011 at the Indiana Department of Correction.

The case is active and ISP detectives, the Miami County Coroner’s Office and internal affairs for the Miami Correctional Facility are assisting in the death investigation.
