Cured in Place Pipe Sewer Rehabilitation Project to start in Mishawaka Oct. 7

ABC 57

MISHWAKA, Ind. -- The City of Mishawaka announced it will begin the Cured In Place Pipe (CIPP) lining process at various locations throughout the city on Oct. 7.

CIPP is a trenchless, no digging, construction method in which a liner, or soft piece of pipe, is installed inside the existing sewer pipe. The liner is then inflated, steamed and cured.

When cured, the liner is as strong and durable as a new piece of pipe.

City officials say on rare occasions during the lining process, a distinctive resin-like odor, like a nail salon, may be detected in nearby homes and businesses.

Officials say the odor does not indicate danger and should dissipate quickly if exposed to air. The odor usually enters through a pipe without a trap, or one that's dried out.

To be proactive, officials recommend owners to fill any floor drains and/or traps with a bucket of water to reduce the possibility of odor entering their home or business.

The odor is usually limited to the block of the actual lining, but on rare occasion may travel through the liner to further locations.

CIPP sewer lining crews will work on the following locations, weather permitting:

  • Monday, Oct. 7 - E. Fourth St between Alford St. and Home St.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 8 - W. Seventh St between Taylor St. and Wells St.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 8 -Grape Rd. between Catalpa Dr. and Edison Rd.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 9 - Dodge Ave. in the rear easement between E. 13th St and E. 15th St.

  • Thursday, Oct. 10 - E. LaSalle Ave from N. Main St. to Sarah St.
