BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich.-A community is still in mourning one year later. On July 11th, 2016, two Berrien County Courthouse bailiffs, Joseph Zangaro and Ronald Kienzle, were shot and killed in the line of duty. Today, Berrien County is coming together to honor their memory.
A candlelight vigil and memorial walk will take place in Saint Joe this evening.
It’s going to be hosted by the Fraternal Order of Police Blossomland Lodge #100 and Berrien County Strong Community Action.
The memorial walk will take place this evening at 8:30 starting at the Berrien County Courthouse. Organizers ask not to arrive later than 8:15.
The walk will proceed to the Berrien County Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial Monument on Lake Bluff Park. If you can’t make the walk, you’re more than welcome to join the group at the monument.
Once the group reaches Lake Bluff Park, there will be a brief memorial service and a candlelight vigil. There will be candles available, but organizers ask if you’re able to, please bring your own so there is enough for everyone.
Bailiffs Joe Zangaro and Ron Kienzle were shot and killed after an inmate, Larry Gordon, was being escorted into a court room, disarmed an officer and opened fire.
