Community invited to open house celebrating Jimtown Gym renovation

JIMTOWN, Ind. -- Baugo Community Schools announced the grand reopening of the Historic Jimtown Baugo Gymnasium will take place Saturday with a ribbon-cutting and public open house at 3 p.m.
School officials say the building was constructed in 1929 and served as the first home gymnasium of the Jimtown Jimmies.
Officials say the $3.5 million renovation project was made possible through public funding, including a $350,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Elkhart County, and major contributions from local donors, led by Bruce and Sandy Clark, matched by Craig and Teneen Dobbs.
Due to its historical significance the building was preserved and repurposed to meet contemporary community needs.
Officials say the renovation included modern infrastructure upgrades, elevator, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical, all while preserving the building's signature elements, like its salt-glazed brick facade, balcony seating, and fixed bleachers.
The building, now known as Craig and Teneen Dobbs Jimtown Community Center, will host diverse programming, including partnerships with the Boys and Girls Club of Elkhart County.
Officials say the facility includes a warming kitchen, fitness and tutoring spaces, and conference rooms named in honor of the Cook, Clark, Plotner, and England families.
Mr. Byron Sanders, Superintendent of Baugo Community Schools, Dr. Tami Hicks, President and CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Elkhart County, and Mr. Levon Johnson, President and CEO of the Greater Elkhart County Chamber of Commerce, will give remarks at the ceremony.
The public is invited to attend the event to explore the reimagined space.
The center is located at 29101 C.R. 22 in Elkhart.
