City of Elkhart inviting community input on future of Old Roundhouse site

ELKHART, Ind. -- The City of Elkhart is inviting the community to provide input on the future of the Old Roundhouse site. The Elkhart Redevelopment Department is applying for federal funding from the EPA to clean up the historic site, and community members are invited to help guide the future of the project.
The site once housed two bustling railroad roundhouses and was a residential and commercial hub. After decades of industrial use and demolition in the 1950s, the city acquired the land in 1983. Despite the contamination, the site's location and historical character offer tremendous potential for redevelopment that supports the community's vision.
The city will be hosting two Community Cleanup and Redevelopment public meetings at the Tolson Center on the following dates:
- Monday, October 27,5:30 to 7:00 with presentation at 6:00 p.m.
- Tuesday, October 28, 12:00 to 1:30 with presentation at 1:00 p.m.
During the meeting, attendees will:
- Hear a presentation on the proposed cleanup plan
- Learn more about the site’s history and current condition
- Share feedback on redevelopment opportunities
- Sign up for future involvement in the planning process
A draft grant application, including the Analysis of Brownfield Cleanup Alternatives (ABCA), is available for public review and comment at the City of Elkhart Redevelopment Office.
Community members are encouraged to attend either meeting, provide input, and help shape the redevelopment vision for this historically significant site.
Written comments on the draft application and ABCA may also be submitted by email through 4:30 p.m. on November 3, 2025.
