Paul Hornung's Heisman-winning season jersey up for auction in Arizona
Grey Flannel Auctions SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Paul Hornung's Notre Dame 1956 jersey from his Heisman Trophy-winning season will be available at Grey Flannel Auctions in Scottsdale, Arizona until the bidding closes Sunday, Nov. 16.
The jersey holds a clear provenance, coming directly from unofficial Notre Dame advisor Julius Tucker.
Tucker was a prominent South Bend businessman and an unofficial advisor to Notre Dame players moving into professional football, including Hornung. Tucker was known for fair negotiations and ensuring players had off-season employment opportunities.
It was during the historic 1956 season where Hornung, then the senior quarterback, passed for 917 yards and three touchdowns, rushed for 420 yards on 94 carries, and intercepted two passes, earning the Heisman Trophy.
It was also during this season that Hornung stayed with Tucker for a week while his housing arrangements were finalized. As thanks for his hospitality and kindness, Hornung gave Tucker the game-worn jersey, alongside his "Look All-American" and a signed baseball.
The historic jersey is up for auction at Grey Flannel Auctions, starting at $5000. As of Wednesday, the bidding has reached $8,052.
