SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- As a part of Black History Month, the City of South Bend will release a series of billboards in the community to honor local African American leaders who've made important contributions to South Bend’s rich history and culture.

"It’s important that we recognize the significant achievements that our Black leaders make in our community,” said Mayor James Mueller. “I am honored to provide this special thank you and recognition to these deserving leaders for their service and countless contributions to South Bend.”

The honorees will be featured on three digital billboards located at South Bend Ave. & Edison, South Bend Ave. & Ironwood Dr. and South Michigan and Ireland for one week starting Feb. 23 until March 1.

This year, two new categories are being introduced: the Arts Award, which celebrates an individual who demonstrates outstanding creativity and versatility across the arts by using their talents to inspire and elevate cultural expression, and the Jaraan Cornell Sportsman Award, which honors an individual who exemplifies excellence in athletics through achievement, leadership, and sportsmanship.
