SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame Stadium hosted an international friendly club soccer match Saturday afternoon between England's Chelsea FC and Scotland's Celtic FC.
The game attracted thousands of FC and Notre Dame fans, filling the stadium with buzzing excitement.
Blue and green could be seen all over the streets of South Bend, creating celebrations all across the community. Among those celebrating was Chelsea fan Mason Plummer.
“There’s people that I’ve met from all over the world that are here to watch Chelsea and there’s a nationwide and countrywide, worldwide fan base, where everybody’s coming together for the same thing and we want to watch Chelsea win today, it’s awesome,” explained Plummer.
Fans came from all across the world to watch the match, like Celtic fans Declan from Dublin and Paddy from Northern Ireland.
“Oh we’re feeling great,” said Paddy, grinning ear to ear. “The excitement here is fantastic. You know what, South Bend has really put on a great show for us here at Celtic, we’re really excited to be here in this town, it’s a wonderful atmosphere, obviously there’s the Irish connection with Notre Dame and the Fighting Irish,” expressed Declan.
The match ended with Celtics taking the win 4-1. Some fans may be feeling that loss, but today’s celebrations were more about coming together for international sports.
