Carter's Ride launches peer support group
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Carter's Ride, an organization dedicated to supporting parents who have lost a child to suicide, is expanding its mission with a brand-new peer support group.
"For us to be able to bring that to our community and just add another layer onto what we already do is like, tremendous for me because maybe, had my son have had something like this, where he could have been outwardly expressive on how he was feeling and how he was struggling with others who just understood at the time, could have made really a difference," CEO of Carter's Ride Amber Brown said.
On what would have been Carter’s 20th birthday, Brown and Media Relations Coordinator Cristina Navarro completed training with the Wildflower Alliance, preparing them to facilitate peer support groups.
The new peer support group starts on Monday at the Cornerstone Community Fellowship Ministry Center in Lapaz, Ind., from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Meetings will be held every other Monday, offering a confidential, judgment-free space for people who have experienced suicidal thoughts or attempts.
"It's just a great place for people to be able to come and open up and let out their feelings and realize that they're again, not alone. And there are other people here experiencing the same thoughts and going through the same things that they are and being able to support one another. That's what we want to offer everybody and anybody. Just come in and experience it, or like talk or don't. It's no pressure, nothing. It's just whatever you need at that time," Navarro said.
