JULY 23: UPDATE: The 33-year-old man arrested in connection to the murder of 29-year-old Courtney Hershberger has been identified as Rene Lopez Alvarado, of South Bend. 

He was arraigned in 5th District Berrien County Court today on the charges were Homicide-Open Murder and Felony Firearms with a bond set at $2 million with a GPS Tether condition.

Authorities say the case is still under investigation as of July 23.

JULY 22 UPDATE: The Berrien County Sheriff's Office reports an autopsy performed on Courtney Hershberger in Kalamazoo showed preliminary results indicating she died of a gunshot wound.

Deputies also determined the suspect and Hershberger were involved in a relationship.

The suspect is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday at 1 p.m., at which point his name will be released.

ORIGINAL STORY: NILES, Mich. -- At approximately 1:16 p.m. earlier this afternoon, the Berrien County Sheriff's Office responded to Franklin Woods at 1950 S. 13th Street in Niles Township for a death investigation.

Upon police arrival, officers located 29-year-old Courtney Hershberger, dead inside the residence.

Through investigating, officers found that the death was suspicious in nature.

A 33-year-old man from Indiana has been arrested and is currently being held at the Berrien County Jail for open murder and weapons charges.

The arrested individuals name is being withheld at this time pending arraignment.

This is still an active investigation.
