Buchanan police warn of scam phone calls asking for Bitcoin to resolve warrants

ABC 57

BUCHANAN, Mich. -- The Buchanan Police Department reports there's been an uptick in community members receiving scam phone calls where the caller claims to be from local or federal law enforcement agencies.

Police say the scammers often state they have warrants for the person's arrest, and to avoid arrest, they must pay by exchanging cash at a Bitcoin station or by some other means.

Authorities say the caller may even ask for personal identifying information like social security numbers, date of birth, etc.

If you receive this kind of call, police advise you not to give out any information, personal or financial.

No law enforcement agency will call a resident to request a bond payment to resolve a warrant over the phone using Bitcoin or any other means, police said.

To avoid being a victim of this scam, police recommend you ask for the name, agency, and contact information of the caller. If the caller refuses to provide this information, hang up immediately.

Police say you shouldn't argue with the caller but instead report the incident to your local law enforcement agency as soon as possible.

You can also report incidents to the FBI online.
