BHDPS responds to fire in condemned house, reminds public of legal ways to help unhoused people

Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- On Tuesday, the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety responded to a house fire in a condemned house that was deemed unsafe to occupy due to a previous fire.

"This home had no power, heat, or water, yet someone chose to live in it," BHDPS officials said. "This is dangerous and illegal, even if you are the property owner! We have programs to get the folks who occupy these structures help."

Authorities ask the public to call them at 269-927-8457 or police if you see a condemned home notice posted and someone is going in/out of the building.

"Today's situation could have easily been a fatal fire," BHDPS officials said. "A tragedy that could have been avoided."
