Benton Harbor receives $100K grant for city hall improvements

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- The City of Benton Harbor announced it’s been awarded $100,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy to make energy efficiency improvements to city hall.
Benton Harbor City Hall was built in 1937 during Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency and was constructed as part of the Works Progress Administration, a nationwide initiative that took place between 1933 and 1938, in response to the Great Depression.
City officials say the grant will cover contractual work to better insulate the building from weather. A contractor will also check the brick walls and where they connect with the roof to find areas where water might be seeping in.
Repairing these issues will help prevent further damage.
City Manager Alex Little said, “This is another great project that the city is working on to revitalize some of our older buildings. City staff and the commission have been working hard to keep our city moving forward.”
The city commission formally accepted the grant on Aug. 4 during the city commission meeting.
