Backyard Brawl returns: Penn and Mishawaka will go head-to-head for the first time in four years
MISHAWAKA, Ind. - A crosstown tradition is returning to Mishawaka for the first time since 2019.
The Backyard Brawl is back, and the excitement is high at both Penn and Mishawaka High School as they prepare for the big game.
This Friday, August 25, the Kingsmen and Cavemen will go head-to-head on Freed Field.
"They grew up in elementary school, playing against the guys their going to play against Friday night…on a huge stage the brightest lights,” said Mark Polsgrove who will be spending his first Backyard Brawl as Director of Athletics at Mishawaka High School.
"It’s a Friday night game, with two really good teams, two highly ranked teams, so you don’t get the opportunity everyday it goes quickly," said Jeff Hart Penn High School’s Athletic Director.
The crosstown rivalry is returning under the lights after a four-year Hiatus, last played on October 18, 2019, making it every player on the roster's, first taste of the tradition.
Fans are eager to get back in the bleachers, that Penn says can fit up to 8,000.
They’re expecting a large crowd, packed with Mishawaka’s student section in White Out Theme and Penn’s in blackout.
The home team told ABC57, safety will be a top priority, with extra security and EMS on sight.
"We host events at Penn, large events pretty regularly, so were not afraid of the crowd but it's going to be a larger crowd than normal, and we just want them to be safe when they're coming to that event. So, find out where they can park, get there ahead of time, and follow the typical school rules,” said Tommy Teeter, PHM's Director of Safety and Security.
Surprisingly enough the schools say the heated rivalry actually brings the people together.
Penn will be hosting a tailgate for fans of both teams when the gates open at 5:00 p.m.
Fans who buy their tickets ahead of time will be able to save a dollar and skip the lines.
Whether you’re a Cavemen or Kingsmen fan, here's all parking, safety, and other information you should know ahead of the game to make the best of the experience.
Also keep in mind no bookbags, noisemakers, or balls will be welcomed in the stadium and there will be no reentry.
