8-year-old killed in crash on Lusher Avenue

ELKHART, Ind.— A 47-year-old man driving a Dodge Ram struck an 8-year-old boy Friday evening, according to a press release from the Elkhart Police Department.

Police say around 6 p.m. on Friday, two juvenile males ran into the roadway while the driver was headed west on the 1500 block of Lusher Ave.

Officers and medics were dispatched to the scene where they provided medical attention to the young victim.

The victim, 8-year-old Maurice Gray, was transported to Elkhart General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. 

Police say the other juvenile was not hit.

The driver of the Dodge Ram was taken to the Elkhart General Hospital for a blood draw.

Gray was a student at Hawthorne Elementary.

Elkhart Community Schools said that they will provide counseling services to children and staff.
