Alarming number of calls for emergency services to Praxis Facility
MISHAWAKA, Ind. - There's been an alarming number of calls for emergency services to the Praxis Facility in just seven months.
The latest was the overdose of a 28-year-old patient Thursday morning, prompting St. Joseph County to file an official complaint with state regulators.
St. Joseph County police calling praxis a drain on its first responders and harmful to both its patients and the community.
Police say the Praxis Landmark Recovery Facility on Bodnar Boulevard in Mishawaka has been in violation of the nuisance property ordinance since it opened in 2022.
There are some troubling numbers being reported by St. Joseph County Police for 2023 alone.
So far this year, in 192 days, there were 217 calls for service. More than one every single day.
Seven of those calls included some kind of drug overdose.
Three were for sex related crimes, including rape.
There was also a report of one stabbing at the same facility.
In the complaint letter to state regulators St. Joseph County Police legal advisor Troy Warner writes in part, "In our opinion, the facility is vastly understaffed, under secured, and the facility is dangerous. Praxis typically has 125-160 patients and less than 15 staff. Praxis has zero security measures, no one coming or going is checked for drugs or weapons."
Meanwhile, more and more former workers and patients are reaching out to ABC57 with their own concerns about the facility.
