MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- The School City of Mishawaka hosted its 5th Annual Special Olympic Unified Champions Day on Tuesday.
It's the district's own rendition of the Special Olympics, and a representative from the Indiana Special Olympics was on site for the fun day too.
Over 100 athletes from seven Mishawaka schools gathered at John Young Middle School to compete in different sports events.
Students were teamed up regardless of their abilities, and everyone got to cross the finish line together.
High school students with the Student Athletic Council came out to help with the different events and provide encouragement, too.
The day of inclusivity rewards students with more than just medals and ribbons, but also friendships.
Event leaders say this is a great chance for kids to make friends with students from other schools, helping to build a more inclusive community.
The School City of Mishawaka shared this recap of yesterday's fun on its Facebook page.
