18-year-old in Elkhart charged with Attempted Murder

Elkhart County Jail

ELKHART, Ind. -- An 18-year-old in Elkhart is charged in a shooting that left a victim seriously injured.

Xzavion Jerraid will face a pre-trial conference later this month on May 21. He's charged with Attempted Murder, a Level 1 Felony. Officials say the shooting happened on February 9, 2026, around 4:00 p.m. Officers were dispatched to the area of 6th and Jefferson Streets. When they arrived at the scene, they found a young male victim shot and unresponsive. The victim was taken in for emergency surgery and ultimately survived.

Investigators viewed security footage taken nearby, as well as spoke to a witness at the scene. Their investigation showed that a black SUV stopped in the road, after which a male stepped out of the vehicle, hit the victim in the head, fired multiple shots, and drove away.

Investigators then spoke to the owner of the SUV, who claimed she knew Jerraid had the car in his possession at the time of the shooting. Jerraid allegedly told her that he had been around a shooting that day and "did something." Electronic and telephone data confirmed a phone associated with Jerraid had connected to the SUV around the time of the shooting, before disconnecting shortly after the shooting.

When later speaking with the victim, investigators learned that the suspect was known to the victim as "Zay." The victim said he spotted the suspect at an Elkhart teen activity facility a couple of months before the shooting and saw social media posts from him regularly.

Jerraid's jury trial is scheduled for August 3.
