Overnight fire in Edwardsburg leaves several mobile home residents without a home

EDWARDSBURG, Mich. -- Devastation hit Edwardsburg's mobile home community Wednesday night, when a fire one mobile unit engulfed four other units.

Edwardsburg Fire Chief Bruce Stack says five fire departments were needed to put out the fire. It took four hours until the fire was fully under control.

"About 11:30 p.m., we got the call for a trailer fire in here and upon arrival, they multiplied to five," says Chief Stack.

An open investigation has been started with Ontwa Township Edwardsburg Police Department, and they report the fire was intentional.

"Initial investigation indicates that the mobile home was deliberately set on fire by the current renter," Chief Douglas Westrick says.

"That individual was arrested on scene and transported to the Cass County Sheriff's Office and lodged on arson charges."

The suspect's name is currently being withheld.

There are reportedly no deaths or injuries. All families from the affected units were safely evacuated, according to Chief Stack.

The destruction from the fire varies per unit, with one unit burned to the ground with other units burned on the sides.

Red Cross in Southwest Michigan is available and will provide resources for those impacted by the fire, according to the community disaster program manager.

"We'll offer food, housing and connections to other resources for folks who have been displaced," Roland Bissonnette says.

"Sometimes we put people in contact with different organizations like Salvation Army or United Way. That might be able to help them get food or clothing or medicines if they've lost those as well."
