'World's Largest Olympic Watch Party' returns to Buchanan

BUCHANAN, Mich. -- Buchanan Mayor Sean Denison announced the City of Buchanan will host what he calls the "World's Largest Olympic Watch Party" for Buchanan native and Olympic Medalist, Hannah Roberts, on Wednesday, July 31 at 7 a.m. ET with a rebroadcast at 7p.m. ET at the Buchanan Common.

Roberts will compete for the Gold Medal in the Paris Olympics in the BMX Freestyle Event.

According to the Mayor's Office, Buchanan currently boasts the largest watch party title after 2021 when Roberts competed and brought home the Silver Medal from the Tokyo Olympics.

City officials say nearly 3,000 people, along with Roberts' parents and family who were unable to attend the event due to COVID constraints, watched from Buchanan as she became the first woman to land a 360-degree tail whip in competition.

The watch party will feature a large Jumbotron TV.

Denison said of the event, "Hannah competed in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and won the Silver Medal in front of what NBC Sports has called the largest Watch Party in Olympic history with estimated attendance between 2,000-3,000. All of Buchanan was out that night and we came together as one. It was truly one of the most memorable events in Buchanan history.  Let's do it again and cheer Hannah on for another successful Olympic competition, this time in Paris."

The free event is open to the public and all are invited to come out and cheer Roberts on.

The Common is an outdoor venue, so city officials encourage spectators to bring their own chairs and be prepared for any weather conditions.

Buchanan Common is located at 122 Days Ave.
