Monday marks last day to register to vote, Tuesday kicks off early voting
INDIANA -- Monday is the last day to register to vote for the 2026 Midterm election which is just 29 days away.
If you didn't register in person, that's alright. You have until 11:59 p.m. Monday night.
"If you go to indianavoters.in.gov, that is a beautiful portal for updating your registration or to register for the first time, and of course that's on the internet, so it happens instantaneously. At this stage of the game, that's what I would say. I would encourage voters to go online to indianavoters.in.gov, and they can register there, or they can check their registration," said St. Joseph County Clerk, Amy Rolfes.
Early voting starts Tuesday. If you can't vote in person, you can apply for a vote by mail absentee ballot no later than 11:59 p.m., 12 days before the election.
In Indiana, you could qualify if you plan to be out of town on Nov. 3, you're disabled, or you're scheduled to work during all voting hours, among other qualifications.
Meanwhile, President Trump signed an executive order back in March to create a nationwide list of verified eligible voters and to restrict mail-in and absentee voting. In August, a federal judge temporarily stopped Trump's order for two weeks. However, Rolfes doesn't foresee any local changes to voting.
"Tomorrow starts absentee in-person voting, and there will be no changes to anything starting tomorrow. Everything is set and ready to go."
There's also a process for military members and people overseas to remain civically engaged.
"What you do if you're military or overseas, you fill out a federal postcard application, and that allows you to get a ballot. You go to indianavoters.in.gov, and you will see military and overseas voters, and it's a specific application that you would make, and you submit it online," explained Rolfes.
Since this is done over the internet, a privacy waiver must be filled out. Then, service members would receive their ballot electronically.
The County building will be closed next Monday, Oct. 12 for the federal holiday so you will not be able to vote at all on October 12.
