Winter storm on the way to Michiana, dangerous weekend travel conditions
Lake effect snow showers will lighten up through the rest of this morning, tapering off in the early afternoon and wrapping up just after noon. It's likely that nowhere in Michiana gets above freezing for the rest of today as highs reach near 30 degrees. A brief lull in the snow starting in the middle of today ends tomorrow morning around 7-8 AM EST as a surface low barrels toward Michiana. This system has the makings of a winter storm and will likely produce around half a foot of snow between tomorrow afternoon and Sunday evening for most of Michiana. Our southern Michigan counties (Berrien, Cass, St. Joseph) likely see between nine inches and a foot of snow within that same time period. If you have to travel tomorrow, try to get on the road early and be OFF the road by 3-4 PM EST. The heaviest snow falls tomorrow afternoon and evening. There is a secondary risk late Sunday through Monday for snow melting and refreezing into an icy layer on the roads. Next week is quiet but cold.
