Why spring sees more severe weather

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- While severe weather can happen anytime in Michiana, the traditionally accepted severe weather “season” is usually from March 1st to June 30.

We have made our way more than halfway through this season with only a couple of widespread events, but the season isn’t over just yet especially with what we are keeping an eye on for tomorrow.

But why do we see a ramp up of severe weather in the spring? A lot of the cause comes from the mixing of air masses.

As we’re going through the winter to summer, we see a lot of temperature fluctuations, all driven by cold dry air masses diving down from Canada, and warm moist air masses coming from the south.

You need the difference between those air masses in the ingredients for severe weather, and this is the best time for us to really see that push and pull.

Now the fall is also a season where we see large temperature fluctuations, the biggest difference is that in the fall it’s usually colder conditions that are driving the weather pattern. Now again that’s not to say that we can’t see severe weather in the fall, it’s just less likely to see the ingredients needed.
