Indiana Department of Correction LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- The Indiana Department of Correction confirmed to ABC57 News that Westville Correctional Facility was without heat Tuesday due to a water main break that morning.
Officials say the facility operates on steam heat, hence the resulting issue.
ABC57 reached out to IDOC after receiving several calls and emails from concerned citizens.
IDOC officials say it's equipped to handle such emergency situations.
Westville staff implemented the following:
- Deployment of portable propane heaters to housing units
- Campus-wide distribution of additional blankets
- Strategic movement to larger areas that are easier to heat (e.g., our gymnasium)
Officials say as of Wednesday morning, the heating system is up and running.
Staff are currently in the process of slowly restoring steam pressure campus wide. Officials say this is done as not to overwhelm the system.
