UPDATE: West Side Middle School put on hold Wednesday following 911 hang-up calls

ABC 57

UPDATE: Elkhart Schools responded to ABC57 with what was sent to families and faculty of West Side Middle School on Wednesday morning.

District officials specified it was not a lockdown, but the school was put on hold.

The district's announcement is as follows:

"This morning, West Side Middle School was placed in a hold after the school received a verbal bomb threat through a phone call at 10:08 a.m. As soon as the threat was reported, staff followed the district’s Emergency Preparedness Plan, which allowed us to move quickly and keep students and employees in a secure location while the situation was assessed.

The Hold was lifted at 10:58 a.m. after law enforcement and our Safety and Risk Assessment team completed their initial review. The threat was determined to be a hoax. Working with the Elkhart Police Department, our team identified   the student responsible, and the matter will continue through the appropriate legal and school disciplinary processes.

Although today’s threat was not credible, we treat every situation seriously. Our procedures are designed to protect students and staff, and they were carried out as intended. I want to thank the West Side staff, our safety team, and EPD for their coordinated response.

We understand how concerning these events can be for families. Please know that student safety remains our highest priority, and we will continue to communicate clearly whenever incidents occur. If you have questions or concerns, please contact our safety and security office at 574-262-5899.
