West Nile virus is spotted in South Bend

NOW: West Nile virus is spotted in South Bend

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -Two pools of West Nile virus positive mosquitos have been found in South Bend.

The St. Joseph County Health Department says it expects more will be identified throughout the summer and into the fall.

For your protection, it's recommended to stay indoors during dawn to dusk- prime mosquito biting times.

Additionally, on clothes and skin, apply an EPA-registered insect repellant with DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, and a para-methane-diol.

If you're in a place where mosquitoes are active, wear a hat, long sleeve shirts and pants.

At home, check all windows and door screens to make sure they're in good repair.

You can also help reduce mosquito breeding by getting rid of any outdoor container that holds water: an old tire, dog bowl or bird feeder.

At this time there are no reports of any confirmed cases in the Michiana area.
