VIDEO: Loud noise coming from underground pipe startles Elkhart County residents
ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- UPDATE AS OF 3:42 p.m.: ABC57 received the following statement from Energy Transfer/Trunkline Gas Co.:
We blew down the line so routine maintenance could be conducted at a valve site. Local authorities and nearby residents were informed beforehand.
UPDATE TWO: The Jefferson Township Fire Department reports a local gas company was performing a controlled release Thursday morning near C.R. 17 and U.S. 20.
UPDATE: A representative with NIPSCO has confirmed to ABC57 the line seen I the Elkhart County video is not one of theirs. The representative stated the line belongs to Trunkline Gas Co.
ORIGINAL STORY: Many Elkhart County residents east of Dunlap began hearing a loud, "jet like" noise echoing through the area around 10 a.m. this morning.
ABC57 has reached out to local gas companies to confirm that what is being seen in this video -- taken near the intersection of C.R. 117 and C.R. 20 in Elkhart County -- is in fact a routine cleaning of gas lines.
The woman who shot the video, Kari Hill, says she believes it is the gas company and that his happens, on average, twice a year with this being the second time it has happened this year.
