Eviction Sealing Program launched in Portage Township
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Portage Township is starting an 'Eviction Sealing' Program, and it's made possible because of another new law taking effect today in Indiana.
Senate Bill 142 allows courts to seal eviction records under certain conditions, giving people a second chance.
Local lawmakers say evictions have become a big problem for many Hoosiers, with some courts seeing hundreds of filings every week, which is why leaders in Portage Township say they are partnering with volunteer lawyers and the Notre Dame Law School to help people get eligible evictions sealed from their records.
"It's simple, if you have made things right, you shouldn't be held back. We know that we have a high rate of evictions in St Joseph County and in our state compared to others, and those evictions can haunt renters and other families for years, so that can block access to housing, jobs and stability. So, this program removes that barrier and builds opportunities to move you into the right direction and to strengthen that safety net," stated State Representative Maureen Bauer.
The first eviction sealing event will take place on July 15 from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the Portage Township Trustee Office.
