Two-vehicle crash results in one arrested for OWI, other driver extricated from vehicle

ABC 57

KNOX, Ind. -- The Starke County Sheriff's Office reports deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash around 7:15 p.m. Saturday in the 1900-south block of Heaton Street in Knox.

Deputies say upon arrival they located two vehicles with heavy damage and airbag deployment.

The report states a Ford F150, driven by 55-year-old Michael Martin Jr. of Coloma, was traveling north on Heaton Street when a Ford Focus, driven by 25-year-old Quentin Acosta of Mishawaka, entered its lane of travel to avoid collision with an animal in the road.

Authorities say that's when the vehicles both moved into the southbound lane where the head-on crash occurred.

Acosta had to be extricated from the Focus and subsequently airlifted for treatment.

Martin Jr. and his passenger were uninjured.

Responding deputies say they detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting on or about Martin Jr.'s person.

Deputies then began an investigation into Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated.

Martin Jr. agreed to a chemical test with a presumptive result of .206.

Martin Jr. was taken into custody and preliminarily charged with Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Causing Serious Bodily Injury, a Level 5 Felony, Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Endangerment, an A Misdemeanor, Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated with a BAC .15 or More, an A Misdemeanor, and Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, a C Misdemeanor.

Authorities say the crash remains under investigation.

Formal charges will be determined by the Starke County Prosecutor's Office.
