SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Two South Bend Riley High School students were named the winners of the Huey Hudson Award, named after a star wrestler from the school who was shot and killed in 2020.
The award is given to senior wrestlers who excel in academics and show good sportsmanship on the mat.
This year's winners are Semaca Ziegert and Zachary Phlunger.
Bill Flat, Riley High School Wrestling Coach, stated "The reason for our wanting to start the scholarship, Huey was an exceptional athlete here at Riley High School and was taken away from us due to gun violence. So, we wanted to start with the scholarship in his name, to promote the fact that we want to encourage people to stay away from gun violence. and we also want kids to succeed in life."
The students who win the Huey Hudson Award also get a college scholarship.
