Two people arrested after allegedly leading chase from Elkhart into Michigan

ELKHART, Ind. - Two people were arrested in Michigan after allegedly leading police on a chase from Elkhart in a stolen vehicle, according to the Elkhart Police Department.

At 12:24 p.m. Thursday afternoon, dispatch received a call about a vehicle being stolen in the 100 block of S. Main St.

According to the owner of the vehicle, he started his 2009 Hyundai Sonata and went back inside.

While inside, the Sonata was stolen, reports said.

The officer at the scene soon gathered the descriptions of two males who were seen getting into the vehicle and driving away.

Around 12:40 p.m., a second officer saw the Sonata traveling east on Dr. Martin Luther King Drive.

That officer initiated a traffic stop but the Sonata's driver did not pull over, reports said.

A pursuit began and eventually moved north on State Road 19 into Michigan.

During the chase, the Sonata's front passenger tire was damaged.

The Sonata traveled north on Five Points Road and then east onto Grange Street before it came to a stop shortly after 1 p.m.

Police initiated a traffic stop and the driver and passenger exited the vehicle without further incident.

They were both taken into custody at the Cass County Jail.

No one was injured and no accidents were reported as a result of the incident.  

The investigation will be forwarded to the Elkhart County Prosecutor's Office for formal charges.
