BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- The twin cities of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph is now more united than ever thanks to a pair of newly dedicated monuments to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The monuments were unveiled Tuesday in a pair of heartfelt ceremonies, led by leaders from both cities, event organizers and Dr. King’s eldest son, Martin Luther King III.
St. Joseph’s monument is at the Margaret B. Upton Arboretum, and is entitled “The Mountaintop”, referencing his famous speech.
Benton Harbor’s monument is in City Center Park and is called “A Seat at the Table”, meant to gather people of all backgrounds together to help realize his dream of unity.
Between ceremonies, proud residents from both cities shared in a unity walk across the Bicentennial Bridge, referencing the many marches Dr. King led during the civil rights movement.
