Two teens arrested and one injured in Michigan City firearm incident

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- The La Porte County Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call on Monday regarding a person suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Police say the incident happened at a residence in the 300 block of Edwards Street in Michigan City. Officers with the Michigan City Police Department, La Porte County EMS, and Michigan City Fire Department responded to the scene.

The initial investigation determined three teenagers ages 15 to 17 were at the residence.

Authorities say they were in possession of two handguns that one of the teenagers claimed to have found earlier in the day.

The report states the 15-year-old discharged a round, and it grazed the head of one of the 17-year-olds. The gunshot did not result in a severe injury.

The 17-year-old was taken to Franciscan Hospital where he was treated and released.

The 15-year-old was charged with Criminal Recklessness, a Level 5 Felony, Pointing a Firearm, a Level 6 Felony, Unlawful Carrying of a Firearm, a Class A-Misdemeanor, and Dangerous Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile, a Class A-Misdemeanor.

The uninjured 17-year-old was charged with Unlawful Carrying of a Firearm, a Class A-Misdemeanor, and Dangerous Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile, a Class A-Misdemeanor.

The Investigative Division was called to the scene and took over the investigation.

With the assistance of the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s Office, a search warrant was obtained for the residence, where police say several pieces of evidence were collected.

Police say the two handguns, both 9mm, were found on-scene by the first responding officers.

The report states one of the recovered handguns was reported stolen, in Michigan City, on Jan. 30.

An additional arrest and charges are currently pending.
