NOW: Tricks to get treats safely this Halloween

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- No matter where you are across Michiana, during the Halloween season there are some tricks to get treats safely. Crime Prevention Coordinator, Kelly Laesch says there's one simple fix to keeping an eye on your child this season, and that's adding reflective stickers to their spooky attire. “So, if there's cars around in like a residential area, but on the street kind of a thing, you definitely want to have drivers be able to see kids, especially in costumes. A lot of them are black, dark.”

Especially if you are new to the area, it's advised to map out your candy path if you're in a residential area. Drivers should drive slow and everyone needs to be aware of their surroundings.

Kids and parents should also keep an eye on their sweet treats, staying away from candy that looks like it has been opened, or packaging or candy that is discolored.

Berrien County offers something to take the pressure off, a tampered candy detection system. Deputy Laesch says, “They just have tables set up, and you can take your bags of candy, and they'll take, like, a metal detecting wand over them, because, you know, you never know if somebody is trying to do something. It just gives that little bit of reassurance.”
