Teenage girl airlifted to hospital after being hit by car while riding bike

ABC 57

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office reports deputies responded to a motor vehicle crash involving a bicyclist near the intersection of C.R. 33 and C.R. 42 on Monday around 5:55 p.m.

The report states a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by a 17-year-old Syracuse boy, was traveling west on C.R. 42 when it passed through the intersection of C.R. 33.

The Silverado then struck a bicycle, ridden by a 14-year-old Goshen girl, who was also traveling west on C.R. 42.

Authorities say the bike became stuck under the Silverado, which continued to drag it.

The report states the Silverado then stopped, at which point the teen driver got out and found the girl lying in the grass.

The girl suffered injuries to her face, left ankle, and left shoulder.

The girl was conscious and breathing before being taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend via medical air flight.

The driver was uninjured and put through the Standardized Field Sobriety Test.

Authorities say he didn't show signs of impairment, and neither drugs or alcohol appeared to be a contributing factor.

Deputies say they are investigating the crash and looking into enforcement action.
