The suspect in the shooting of a female victim and the shooting death of 38-year-old Kaylon Woods of South Bend has been identified as 41-year-old Adonis Latroy Joseph of Elkhart, a former South Bend Police Department.
SBPD says Joseph was hired in May of 2011.
In December 2017, per Chief Scott Ruszkowski, the Police Department’s Internal Affairs began an investigation into allegations involving Joseph, leading to him being relieved of duty.
On Jan. 26, 2018, Joseph resigned from the SBPD
Chief Ruszkowski released the following statement regarding this incident:
“Our hearts are with everyone affected by this horrible and senseless tragedy."
The Elkhart Police Department responded to an apartment in the 2500 block of Links Drive following a 911 call about a shooting around 1:50 p.m., Monday.
The female victim was located outside the apartment suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, while Woods was found inside where he was pronounced dead.
The female victim is recovering from serious injuries at a local hospital.
An investigation began and at around 3:45 p.m., Elkhart County and St. Joseph County SWAT units were deployed to a home in the 28000 block of Golden Pond Trail, Elkhart, to assist the Elkhart County Homicide Unit.
Authorities were attempting to find Joseph.
A house fire was then reported at the Golden Pond Trail home around the same time.
Fire crews put out the fire, and a deceased person was located inside.
The body was identified as Joseph and appeared to have a gunshot wound to the head.
