SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- One man is in custody and facing multiple charges after a recent shooting in South Bend.

36-year-old Pedro Rodriguez Soto faces several charges, including Murder (Aiding, Inducing or Causing an Offense), Burglary with a deadly weapon, Burglary of a dwelling, and Intimidation.

The shooting happened August 3; South Bend Police responded to the 1000 block of College Street. Officers found 33-year-old Alberto Soto Rodriguez with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say, through witness statements and video evidence, they were Soto and Rodriguez were allegedly attempting to break into the home where the shooting occurred. Witnesses allegedly told officers both of them were armed.

Residents of the home told police they heard the two suspects break in and enter their kitchen.

One resident allegedly warned the two they were armed and shouted at them to leave. Residents then allegedly saw a man enter the living room, pointing a gun at them while they were standing in the stairway. Officials say ballistic evidence appears to show that both one of the residents and one of the intruders fired at each other.

The residents allege that a van pulled up in the alley near their side door, and that they saw one of the intruders drag the other toward the van. One of the intruders then allegedly pointed his gun at the residents again; the residents say they fired back from the upstairs window.

Soto later arrived at the hospital and allegedly stated that he was injured in a shooting during a possible robbery or home invasion. He also allegedly claimed he and his brother were doing landscaping nearby. Investigators say Soto was injured by debris but was not shot.

Soto is being held at the St. Joseph County Jail.
