Street closures to start March 4 in Elkhart for Benham Avenue project

ELKHART, Ind. -- The City of Elkhart announced that multiple street closures will begin on March 4 as part of the Benham Avenue project that falls under the ASPIRE project umbrella.
Street closures include Benham Avenue from Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, excluding the Dr. MLK intersection, north to Harrison including the Harrison intersection, and Harrison from 3rd to 2nd Street, including the Harrison and 2nd Street intersection.
City officials say this is a utility infrastructure project with roadway and pedestrian-focused improvements.
The project will consist of a new water main, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, stormwater force main, new sidewalk, lighting, signals, and roadway pavement replacement, according to officials.
Officials say the project includes a realignment of Benham Avenue with an improved pedestrian pathway under the railway bridge that will feature lighting and landscaping.
The stormwater improvements will help to reduce flooding on Benham Avenue, according to city officials.
