Starke County face-to-face with severe weather

STARKE COUNTY, Ind. -- On March 10, 2026, Starke County got hit with severe weather and a possible tornado near Knox.

ABC57 crews were on scene the morning after to see the damage firsthand. From downed power lines, uprooted trees, to barns without roofs, there was a lot of damage to the rural parts of Knox and North Judson.

ABC57’s Sidney Moore spoke with one resident who had a close call with the severe weather.

Morgan Prater, a local resident, was right in the path of destruction. He explains, "I was standing at the door trying to see if I could spot the tornado through the lightning flashes. And suddenly, I just heard it like it was like a train, like they say it's like a train, and it was like coming right at me through the field. So, I ran to shelter."

Like many other Hoosiers in the state, when hearing the sirens go off, he thought it was no big deal. He says "I thought, you know, this is, this is no big deal. I'm tough guy. I can just hang out and watch this go down when you hear that sound, you're running for cover."

Prater tells ABC57'a Sidney Moore it was just like the in the movies, it sounded like a train coming through and he moved to shelter and made it out safely.

In the early hours of the morning many residents were still without power with around nine power lines on one stretch of road alone. There were also many fallen trees, leading to debris on many of the roads.
